How do I verify that the person is really the owner of the pet I found?..

Sadly, this is something that happens too often..

You find someone elses pet, and you start inquiring everywhere you can to see if you could locate the owner. You contact the local vets, and SPCAs. And low and behold someone (a total stranger obviously) calls you, and tells you thanks, the pet is his..

Now what?...

How do you know that the pet really belongs to this person? Is there any way that you can be sure that this pet really belongs to the person in question?..

Having personally experienced this situation, here are some of pointers that you could use to figure out if the person is truly the owner of the pet in question.

  • Ask the person to bring along some photos of him/herself with the pet. (Most owners that love their pets will have these.)
  • Some kind of ownership papers that might prove ownership
  • Take the animal to the vet where the owner supposedly treats his pet, and ask the vet to confirm ownership.
  • Of course the way the pet reacts to the person is usually also a very typical sign, which could help you clear any suspicions you might have.
  • Ask the person (over the phone) to idenitify something specific about the pet.
